A Life of Pain is a black‑and‑white portrait series published as a compact photo book displayed at the Vanier College Vernissage. It tells the story of young rebels against the system, refusing to conform or comply to the ways of authority. The pressures of success, in combination with the malicious intent to achieve their desires results in a troubled youth, constantly seeking temporary satisfaction.

Our studio led the photography, sequencing, and book design. Portraits follow a rule‑of‑thirds orientation, placing the eyes near the upper intersections to create presence and directness. Subjects are framed close to centre, supported by fashion details and tonal texture that ground each image without theatrics.

The final book is unified by controlled lighting and precise composition. A soft, off‑center key light shapes the core features, while a secondary light behind the subject defines the silhouette. The simple, tactile format encourages slow page‑turning and gives each portrait room to resonate.

Being part of this series made me slow down and see myself honestly. Standing in front of the camera stripped away the noise, and what’s left in those pages feels real. It’s strange, but you can almost hear the silence in the frames.

The photo book’s pacing and layout encouraged longer engagement, helping viewers connect with the narrative thread.

Consistent lighting and framing produced a cohesive visual language from cover to closing spread.

The stripped‑back presentation gave the work a focused, editorial presence that translated well in both digital previews and in‑hand viewing.
